Manymanyhaha Record Things is proud to release the third album from The Halfwit Formerly Unknown As Idiopathic titled Presents The 04/20 Album!

When asked, The Halfwit Formerly Unknown As Idiopathic would not, or could not, put his music into a classification or category.
“I’m not a fan of the endless categorization and sub-categorization of music, to be honest,” he said. “I will tell you, however, the music that I love. Boards of Canada, Goat, Jesu, Neurosis, Mayaan Nidam, Marissa Nadler, My Bloody Valentine, Quicksand, Alah Hovhannes, Arvo Part, Helen Gillet, The Beatles, The Lyres, Barker, Aphex Twin, The Flaming Lips, Sonic Youth, Fugazi, Steel Pole Bathtub, Milk Cult, Prince, The Cure, these are the kinds of things I listen to all the time. But I don’t think I sound like any of those. Maybe in spots here and there. And I’m always searching for new stuff. There is just so much amazing and unheralded music being made out there in 2020. It’s difficult to sift through.”
Who is this person?
“I’m just a bloke from North America. I enjoy my anonymity. Been messing with guitars and instruments for a long time. Let’s just say decades.”
Why has it been only recently that you’ve been putting stuff into the public domain?
“I don’t know. Time crawls in strange increments. And then I listened to something I did and I was like, hmmmmmm, let’s release that. And then something else, and now a third thing.”
Are we to assume you have a large backlog of releases that may be coming?
“If I can find the time, yes. Problem is I am always creating new stuff, loads of it, much more than I have time to refine into something releasable. And that’s just the new stuff. But yes, there is hundreds of hours of stuff just like the stuff I’ve released thus far that is awaiting someone’s attention.”
What is the creative process like for you?
“Everything is set up for me to create. Though I do write some things, I might pick up on something while noodling and refine it and expand upon it over time, most of the recorded stuff is me coming up with something in the moment, looping it, coming up with something else on top of that, loop that, looping drums and bass parts to that, vocal meanderings etcetera. I can do 16 tracks of looping at a time, and often use all of those tracks and then I will noodle over all of that too. And then I will break it all down and build it back up in a different way. Besides intimacy with a lovely partner, it is the most fun I know in this world.”
You did not mention keyboards.
“Though I have an OP-1, I should probably sell it because I don’t use it and I don’t have any other keyboards. What you think sounds like keyboards are just guitar with effects. The drums are real too.”
Do you do any computer manipulation?
“Not really. I will edit each piece for length, because some of these pieces are an hour long or more, but other than that, I don’t put any effects on anything in the computer. The computer is just an length editing tool for me. I might also correct the drum timing here and there because I’m a shitty drummer and don’t want listeners to suffer. But not much.”
What about the people speaking?
“I’m just feeding a text-to-voice engine little things I wrote and using a sampler to play them back in the music. My girlfriend isn’t a fan of them but I am.”
This album, Presents The 04/20 Album, is only stuff you recorded in April of 2020?
“Yes. That calander on the cover, are the actual dates that I came up with and recorded each piece. Each song is in order of appearance into the world.”
Do you play live?
“In front of people? I thought I did but my shrink says those people aren’t real. But I am working on a road case that will house my set up so that when the pandemic subsides, I can more easily transport it to places where the people are real shit and piss factories, not the fakes ones I see. I will probably wear a mask.”
Will there be a 05/20 album?
“I am working on it as we speak. It’s over 20 songs so it is going to be a minute.”
Can you talk about the name?
“The Halfwit Formerly Unknown As Idiopathic? Well, the first two releases were under the moniker Idiopathic, which is a doctor’s term for a symptom or ailment that arises spontaneously or from an obscure or unknown cause, or is peculiar to the individual. I first came across it in the Steven Soderbergh film Gray’s Anatomy which is a Spalding Gray piece. It also suggests something or someone who is pathologically idiotic, which is how I feel all too often. I also am a Prince fan and I was having fun one day and came up with The Halfwit Formerly Unknown As Idiopathic. Which is all true.”
